Was it agonizing and debilitating? Did it make you gasp out loud and sit down, keeping you from playing with your neice and nephew? I doubt it. I understand what you're trying to say, and please find a different metaphor to describe the loss of something not present that doesn't minimize a marginalized group's extreme pain. For example: "and I felt the pain of his absence like a lost wisdom tooth." or "and I felt his absence like I was igniting an empty tank of Nos."
